Maybe you are feelin James Brown funky and you just can’t help but shout out a loud “watch me!” Or on the other hand, maybe you are feeling funky like an old sock. What to do? Move on through it. Literally.
Thoughts and emotions are forms of energy and energy needs to move. Stuck energy causes dis-ease. Feeling sluggish, moody, grumpy, tense, or agitated is a signal that an energy needs to be tended to and released.
There are two approaches to moving energy and I think both are equally of value.
1) Bring awareness to the cause of the energy (thought/emotion/sensation) and then consciously release it.
Often times simply shining a light on the funk monster is enough to scare it away. Awareness is a light that disintegrates darkness. Being able to see the problem is often enough to loosen its grip on you. Then you have the ability to recognize it when it reappears. Here are some of my favorite ways to illuminate nasty energies and dispel them:
- Talking with a friend or coach
- Identifying the sensation in my body and then interviewing it
- Mindfulness meditation
- Authentic movement (tracking the story through movement)
2) Just move it out.
So incredibly simple but equally as powerful is just letting the energy release. It may sound simplistic but we do this on a regular basis! Laughing and crying are inborn ways of moving energy through. Don’t stop the flow! You’ll feel so much better afterwards. Yoga, running, and exercise are also powerful mood shifters. Here are some simple ways that I love to move things out.
- Shaking (try it!)
- Jumping on my rebounder
- Walks & hikes
- Running Energy meditation
